spot.lite: biscuits

today on our spot.lite, one of the retailers we are most grateful for: biscuits, located in san jose’s japantown. why are we so grateful? because biscuits was our first retail space and basically the launching point for type.lites. we wouldn’t be where we are today without this adorable pet boutique and owners jennifer pan and steve kim. so in the spirit of the season, an extra special spot.lite today… here’s what steve had to say about biscuits.

how/when did you start your company/business?
The idea was conceived towards the end of 2009, at that point it was just an idea. The concept flourished in to a business plan, business plan to location, and location to the grand opening, which all took place in 2010. Our doors officially opened July 2010. We have a passion for animals that we knew stood out a little more than your average person and needed an avenue or medium to give back in our own way.

where do you come up with your ideas/concepts?
Our ideas and concepts spawn from our years of being students of life. Meaning, everything we’ve learned about dogs, cats, and building a brand identity, all contribute to what comes out of our noggins. Fortunately, one of us is a geek for branding/marketing and the other for innovative pet products, so it works perfectly. We like to always push the envelope in every thing we do, whether its designing a new email campaign, bringing in a new line of products on rotation, or creating new merchandise concepts.

where do you gather inspiration (for anything)?
As cliche as it might sound we gather inspiration from all walks of life. We’re like sponges when it comes to inspiration for ideas. Looking at really creative couture packaging sparks ideas for store design, spectating a masterpiece by an architect inspires merchandising, and a heart felt story about a dog rescue gives us motivation to continue to promote well-being amongst pet owners. We keep our eyes and ears open and make it a priority to make sure we’re keen to our surroundings.

if you could pick someone to be your #1 fan, who would it be?
Mom. Well for one of us mom, the other soon to be mother-in-law! She’s contributed and continues to contribute so much to our business and keeps us inspired. We love her!

what’s the most exciting thing that’s happened since you started your company/business?
I think one of the most exciting moments was being featured on the front page of the San Jose Mercury. But, the most exciting moments were all the times we’ve helped save a dog’s life.

spot.lite: vivian chen photography

this week’s spot.lite features one of our earliest supporters and dear friends, viv of vivian chen photography. she’s been around the wedding photography scene for quite some time and we love her creative eye. we’ve been lucky enough to see her talented work and have been dying to share the magic she creates for her clients. she also just got married herself and her eventful wedding story was featured on a practical wedding. (trust us, it’s a good story!) what better time than after this monumental occasion to pick her brain?

how/when did you start your company/business?
My business has been slow to grow as I’ve been juggling working with other photographers as well as building my own business since 2006. I’ve always been interested in art and photography is something I picked up in high school and in college. It was after I graduated college and had too much free time being an unemployed college graduate living at home that I turned to my camera to stay sane. When I moved to San Francisco, I had various photography jobs from shooting for a hip hop magazine, working a booth at the SF Zoo and taking pictures of newborns at the hospital. It wasn’t until I found a job doing post production with a local wedding photographer that the seed was planted for my own photography business and it’s grown ever since.

where do you come up with your ideas/concepts?
I’m always looking at other creative people for inspiration. And I’m constantly challenging myself to shoot and create something everyday. It helps keep my art from becoming stagnant.

where do you gather inspiration (for anything)?
Being outside in nature. Nothing more beautiful than what’s already in front of you.

what’s the most exciting thing that’s happened since you started your company/business?
Finding “A Practical Wedding” blog community and deciding to work with them. It’s important in my business to work with people who you get along with. http://apracticalwedding.com/vendors/vivian-chen-photography/

advice for others? best advice you’ve ever received?
Be yourself. Don’t try to emulate what others do. Figure out what makes you unique and exploit that! Also, be patient. A business doesn’t become successful overnight.

first job you ever had?
My first job was working at a veterinary hospital. I got to take care of the boarded dogs and cats (dog walking, kibble scooping and lots of poop cleaning) as well as help clean up the hospital before closing. There were a lot of sweet animals that lived in the building too. They were my favorite coworkers.

what are some things you can’t live without?
My camera. My husband. And my Android cellphone. (As much as I love Apple design, my business life is all Google.)

what’s your current obsession?
Rebranding my business! I can’t wait to clean up my logo/image and provide my clients with a better experience!

something most people would be surprised to know about you?
When I first moved to SF, one of my first job interviews was as a photo retoucher for a gay porn website.  I didn’t get the job, but I always wonder what my life would be like now if I had.

biggest pet peeve?
Spelling mistakes and bad grammer. And replying-all to emails when it’s not necessary.

favorite food?
Mexican! When I went on a juice cleanse, the only food I was craving was Mexican… a burrito with chips and guacamole.

favorite type.lites product/scent?
Seaglass! Cedar Sage is a nice one too for when I want something more earthy.

{top photo: pfsmakeup blog; bottom photo: Ashley Maxwell photography}

how/when did you start your company/business?
I have worked in the cosmetic industry for 7+ years, experiencing as many aspects of a makeup artist as possible. Over the years, I would occasionally take weddings on the weekends when I was able to get time off from my retail job. Three years ago, my girlfriend Taylor encouraged me to start blogging, and that’s really when things took off for me. I work really hard, spending anywhere from 5 to 6 hours a day blogging, instagramming, and replying to clients…on top of trials and photo shoots during the week and weddings on the weekends. I LOVE what I do, and these past 2 years have blown my mind… I recently just quit my day job (I was working 7 days a week) so that I can commit 100% to Priscilla Francine Makeup, and am so excited for this new chapter in my career.

where do you come up with your ideas/concepts?
When I work with a photographer, a company, or a bride… I dig deep and ask a lot of questions. What is the overall feeling they want to achieve, what is the color scheme, what is their favorite feature, and so on… after I gather this information I take in to consideration the models skin coloring, and face shape. Than… I begin my artwork and I let the moment guide me in the right direction. If it is my own photo shoot I have set up, I normally am itching to try a new product/color, so I will create a story board (searching for images online/pinterest) for what I am looking for.

where do you gather inspiration (for anything)?
A lot of inspiration comes from my friends… I have some super creative and successful entrepreneurs in my life.  Some of my gals include photographer Ashley Maxwell, fashion blogger Taylor Price (Warren), hair stylist Danielle Derksen, and pastry baker Rachel from Sweettooth Confections. All of these women are extremely talented in what they do, but I admire their determination and passion most of all. They have encouraged me in some way to succeed in my business as a makeup artist and I am so thankful for these ladies to be my inspiration.

if you could pick someone to be your #1 fan, who would it be?
My #1 fan is my husband. I call him my PR agent…I’m more humble and quiet about what I have created for myself, so he is the one who brags and spreads the word about my business. He believes in me and is my motivation to keep going and be even better than the day before.

advice for others? best advice you’ve ever received?
Work to live, don’t live to work. While I have put in many, many, many hours to keep my business thriving, I NEED a balance in my life. I created my own business so that I could spend more time with friends, and be present in my family’s lives. Take as many vacations as you can, go on dates as often as you can with your partner, and make time for your girlfriends!!  All these things will energize you to deliver the best when you are at work.
The best advice I have received was from Janice Daoud-she recommended that I start a portfolio, which helped me develop my aesthetic as an artist. Once I created a portfolio, I figured out what type of client I wanted to work with.

is there something obscure you know about more than the average person?
Probably color theory…I see undertones in peoples skin and am able to create a unique foundation color on the spot. I don’t measure or remember what I did…but it always comes out perfect.

current obsession?
My current obsession is the color raspberry! It could be clothes or makeup…but if it’s raspberry than I’m all about it!! My obsessions change monthly…so check into my blog for next month’s obsession!

spot.lite: angelcake

this edition of spot.lite features angelcake designer ellen singer. we’re in love with her whimsical jewelry and just her, in general. when she’s not making jewelry, you can find her running the floor at pretty penny which just happens to be one of our favorite vintage stores of all time.  her inspiring positive energy is infectious, and we’re so excited to give you a sneak peak behind angelcake.

where do you gather inspiration (for anything)?
Everything inspires me.  Since I was little, I’ve loved fantasy movies like Legend, Dragonslayer, The Princess Bride.  Fairy tales and romance play a big part in my creations.  Nature does it for me, too.  I love to be outside, gazing at the tops of trees in the sky or taking in colors of flowers.  I take long nature walk and listen to music.

what’s the most exciting thing that’s happened since you started your company/business?
Meeting some of the best people in the Bay Area, crafters, jewelry designers, candle makers, etc.  I’ve become friends with so many creative folks. Making jewelry has made me more social.  Participating in craft fairs is exciting, too.  Just getting positive feedback from someone passing by is so major.

what are some things you can’t live without?
I can’t live without music.  It just about rules my life.  It determines what I am going to wear, how I will feel that day, what I will create.  It is always playing around me! And my husband.  He’s pretty great, too!

something most people would be surprised to know about you?
I’m really very nice.

currently on rotation on your ipod?
British pop music, old and new.  I love Oasis, The Beatles, Arctic Monkeys, Small Faces.  Chances are, if it has a British accent, I love it!

if you could pick someone to be your #1 fan, who would it be?
Jewelry designer Tarina Tarantino.  Then maybe she would give me a job.

Mother Nature

today’s spotlite features the adorable intwined, bow ties with clashing personalities. the lovely jenn has created a collection of unique bow ties, ties and accessories that truly delight. pick up some of her goods here and see what she had to say below.

how/when did you start your company/business?
It all started when I decided to make a bow tie as a Valentine’s day gift for my boyfriend at the time. My friends really liked it so I started making bow ties for them. Then when I was laid off from my 9 to 5, I decided to start up a company since I was having so much fun doing it!

where do you come up with your ideas/concepts? where do you gather inspiration (for anything)?
I love to people watch and observe what they’re wearing. Also, me in a fabric store is like a kid in a candy store.  I LOVE fabrics — colors, prints, textures. A lot of my inspiration is drawn from being in the store, pulling whatever fabrics that catches my eye.

advice for others? best advice you’ve ever received?
Be competitive but in a healthy way. Work together to help each other grow, you’ll get a lot further in life.

what are some things you can’t live without?
Laughter, Friends, Family, and my google calendar >.<

what’s your current obsession?
Japanese food, but that’s past present and future obsession. Oh, also Instagram for Intwined. Everytime someone new adds me or likes my photo, I get really giddy inside.

something most people would be surprised to know about you?
Up until recently, I used to be really scared of needles. I even ran away bawling my eyes out when I was about to get my ears pierced when I was an early teen. Ironically though, I got my first tattoo before I got my ears pierced..

currently on rotation on your ipod?
Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, The xx, Beastie Boys, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jazzy Jeff’s Summertime mix.
